Dry Skin Care

Dry Skin Causes

Not everyone is lucky. Some people have exceptionally wonderful skin. Not so fortunate others use the various kinds of moisturizers that are available in markets in order to enhance their beauty. Yet others have such terrible skin that it is indeed beyond any repair. So they resort to make-up. What is surprising (and even annoying to the less blessed) is that there are some people who get away with having perfectly good skin without taking additional care of themselves while there are others who have very dry skin.

So what is it that makes one person’s skin different from another person’s? Your mother will tell you that you aren’t eating right. Your friends will probably ask you to blame it on your genes (but don’t tell your parents that. That would be asking for trouble!) And your Dermatologist would probably be closest to the correct answer and tell you that Environmental Factors are the real reason that an individual suffers from dry skin while another individual doesn’t.

Dinosaurs might have liked their scaly, patchy skins but I can assure you that human beings do not. It’s probably wise, therefore, to examine why one’s skin becomes dry and what are the factors behind this:

Low Humidity Levels

The drastic, almost meteoric fall in humidity levels is surely a strong determinant of why a human being’s skin is dry. One’s skin is unable to draw moisture from the air and the skin pores cease to breathe. That is when skin becomes rough, patchy and scaly. If you’re one of those people whose houses are devoid of humidity, it is suggested that you use a humidifier.

Excessive Bathing

Alright, here comes the tricky one. So you thought all the bathing and showering would rid you of all the agony because water equals moisture right? Wrong! All the moisture that is stored in your skin can go for a toss if you bathe excessively with warm or piping hot water. Using cold or even cool water is advisable though. At least that will go easy on your skin.

Use of harsh, detergent based soaps

Perhaps you thought that you were cutting costs by using the same soap for cleaning clothes and having a bath. Don’t do that. And don’t use any rough, detergent based soap either. You could use Dettol soap or even Lifebuoy, soaps which are easily available in the market. Better still, use something mild and gentle, like a moisturizer and stay away from soap.

Not using an effective moisturizer

You don’t have to have the spending power of Eva Longoria in order to afford a good moisturizer. Effectiveness does not necessarily mean costly. Any moisturizer that has vitamins A, C and E present is a good moisturizer. Also, sunscreen is a must. You don’t want to start suffering from skin cancer!

Not protecting your skin from the elements

In Summer, use good sunscreen screen lotions and if you live in a country that has harsh and bitter winters, you should dry and cover yourself from head to toe. Wear a scarf and a hooded jacket. Remember, your skin needs to be protected. If you’re a swimmer, use sunblock with UV rays. The chlorine in the water contributes directly to dry skin. Even if you’re a sprinter, a sunblock is recommended.

Now that we’ve discussed the causes of dry skin, here’s wishing you all the luck! Hope you prevent yourself from having dry skin!
